If you have a loved one that is not able to do everything on their own but is wary about moving to an assisted living facility or nursing home, you might want to consider getting them in-home care for them. This allows them to receive the care they need in the comfort of their own home.
Why should they get in-home care?
Your loved one may have not expressed it yet, but they are likely afraid of losing their independence. It can be a scary thing to go from taking care of yourself to needing help with things like dressing, toileting, bathing, and eating. Even if they can do the personal care activities but are unable to drive and run errands or cook their own meals, in-home care can be helpful. With this type of care, they will be able to stay in their own home and feel more at ease. They also don't feel like a nursing home or assisted living facility is dictating what they do each day.
What options are there for in-home care?
You will find that there are a few different options when it comes to getting in-home care. Many caregivers aren't actually licensed home health caregivers, but family members. The main benefit to this option is that you don't have to pay for the caregiver in most cases, and the senior will feel more comfortable with them. Another option is to have a home health caregiver visit their home daily or as needed. Before you assume you can't afford it, you should look into Medicare, as they often cover some of the costs involved.
What types of services are provided?
There are a myriad of services that can be provided to your loved one if they choose in-home care. Some caregivers are nurses, so they specialize in medical care, such as administering medications, taking their vitals, and providing physical therapy following an accident or surgery. Other caregivers are there for activities the senior can no longer do, such as cooking, laundry, running errands, and cleaning their home. As the senior gets older, they might also need help with using the restroom, taking a shower, getting dressed, and eating.
Medical services are the in-home care services most often covered under Medicare and similar programs. They are usually meant for when a physician says the senior needs in-home care for medical reasons, such as following a major illness.
